Albritton Family Reunion 2011: Sweet Dreams of Rhythm and Dancin'

Grandma and Papa
4 Aunts, 4 Uncles
21 Grandkids
All Under One Roof
Albritton Family Reunion

It was many, many months of organization, lots of monkeysurveys, hours of research and coordination, looong emails, numerous phone calls, detailed planning and planning for every event from rain to shine, and it all resulted in a family of 21 gathering for fun!

The Lake House in New Braunfels
The rental house had the best backyard in Texas.  Huge trees for shade, escape from the brutal sun.  A pier to fish or secure the boats.  Lake water to swim.  Lots of room to run, a grill, and bugs and lizards for the catching.

Uncle Erik is in the canoe.

During the days, we swam, did crafts, napped, or prepped for the evening's events.  Some mornings we had field trips and each evening we had some activity planned.

First Evening:  Scavenger Hunt
Since our theme was Sweet Dreams of Rhythm and Dancin'--it was a musical scavenger hunt, drumming, name that tune, groovy dancing, sing a song, and Musical Hugs were some of the stations in the hunt.

Water Fun During the Day
canoe, kayak, fishing, and swimming

Dude, water and sticks.  What more could you want.

Papa the Fisherman

The First Ones in the Water.

This is what Uncle Erik and Merritt did for most afternoons.

(yes, that is a LIZARD going for a ride.  Our kids are great sailors!)

The people responsible for all of us.

the kids loved this thing

On Tuesday morning, before we had a chance to get sunburned or sick of each other, we had family pictures taken and we were all pleased with how well the photo session went.

After the photographer left us on Tuesday Morning, we went to work on tie-dye t-shirts.
There is a LONG tradition of matching outfits in our family.  I think it came from the fact that we were all girls and Mom could sew.

This year we had "personalized" matching shirts.

Some of the finished shirts.  We wore the shirts to our wildlife ranch fieldtrip.

(Aunt Mandy is making sure we had all the necessary info for our trip to the wildlife ranch.)

Girls' Night & Guys' Night
We took time to have Girls' Night (during kid movie night with the Dads)
and Guys' Night (after the Talent Show).

There is no reason to take funny picture poses if I can't show them to someone.  You'll see lots of those from me.

(Taken On Guys' Night:  Bedtime Stories with Aunt Mandy and then glowsticks from Grandma)

One morning, we ventured to Landa Park.
Hitched a ride on the train, watched a bunch of ducks & a waterrat swim around, and swam in some cold water (not pictured).

Bug Catching in the Backyard
The kids found plenty of bugs and lizards running around the place.

There are two, ah-hem, older kids with this bunch looking at lizards.

Merritt and the lizard he (aka his dad) caught.  He was so proud of this thing.

Another morning we visited the Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch.

That's us in the "brown car" with Merritt on my lap.

The Erbstoessers got an "inhouse" visitor.  You could hear the screams several cars behind them.  (heheeheee)

the petting zoo.
true to nature, these guys will eat anything.
we tried to only feed them feeding pellets but they went for much more than that.

Merritt loves animals, especially farm animals.  He hugged every goat a couple of times and smelled like he did afterwards.

The Attacking Zebra and Uncle Phillip

An awesome shot considering it was after the event.  Our shirts look smashing!

Yeah, he is checking out the goat's "other" end.

My Favorite Evening Entertainment:  Albrittons' Got Talent Night

Lipsyncs, hula skill demonstrations, marshmallow shooter instructions, magic tricks, and balloons.

It was awesomely fun!

(Erik is in the wig)

Our performance:  You Are The One That I Want (originally from Grease)

Magic Trick from the Moores:  Preston disappears and reappears

(Baby Lily had no problem sitting in that box while Preston did his thing . . . which was amazing.  And then Preston disappeared and reappeared behind us.  And, you should see those Moores move .  .  . they've got groovy dance skills.)

Marshmallow Shooter 101

Aunt Debbie had hula skills.

Uncle Arthur, not so much.  But, he can drum; so he's always invited to the party.

The Erbstoessers performed Grease Lightning (from Grease, of course).

Don't they look SMASHING!

And then we made hats and animal balloons to the tune of "99 Red Balloons"
All of our kids can DANCE!

One evening we had Camp Fire Night (sans campfire due to the burn ban)
Uncle Arther told stories.
Uncle Pace recounted tales.
Grandma opened the Time Capsule.
Smores!
iPinata!

(when the gifted kid gets bored, he ties himself to the pinata rope)

We really tried to make the activities flexible so that you could participate if you wanted to take a break if you needed.  Merritt took a break most evenings.  He ran his dad around the property for a couple of hours.

Papa and Grandma with Geodes

Crafts
We decorated bags, nametags, made caterpillars with Aunt Debbie.  And then under the cover of darkness, Aunt Debbie made snowglobes for the kids.  (we had many more crafts planned in case it rained, but it didn't and we were able to swim and boat for hours and hours)

I would remiss if I didn't mention the amazing food.  The Albritton Women exchanged recipes and we planned meals during the reunion.  From deluxe breakfasts to fajitas to grilled sausages to chicken satay to smores and Popsicles and ice cream sandwiches---we did not go without good grub.

When we needed a break from cooking, we had a lunch at Jason's Deli where the kids were the BEST BEHAVED children on the PLANET.

Jenn making sopapillas.

This is what I did when Jenn was cooking. Such cute little sweeties!

At Jason's Deli

Evy waiting his turn at Jason's Deli
(we, meaning the kids and Sheila, played games while we were waiting for our food)

Our last evening meal was grilled outside and we dined on the picnic tables.

So Fun!

All of us pitched in to make this a success!  I loved the fact that Uncle Phillip was able to burn a CD of all of our pictures right on site so that I could add 4,000,000,000,000 pictures to this blog post.  I know you are glad about that, too!

This Ain't Yo' Mama's Spiderman Plan

My house is now full of traps and webbings.

It all started with the play of an innocent.

Merritt grabbed the container of floss this morning.  Erik encouraged him (whatever it takes to keep him occupied and out of the knife drawer).

And then, the kids figured out that the MILES of floss that was pulled out looks like WEBBING, as in good ole' Spidey's webbing.

And then, the planning and physics of putting floss on doorknobs, under fans, around corners, and all tied with precision and rehearsal . . .resulted in my house is now covered with the webbings of my two Spidermans.  (MAAAAAAN as Merritt says.)

Here is one such set-up:

floss flows from bedroom, across the landing, under the fan, to another doorknob

tied securely, I might add.

Even though Everett is supposed to be resting right now, the doors keep ghostly opening and closing.

And, he hid the floss container in a "secret Spiderman spot."

And, he just started adding clothespins to the stuff.  Evidently, it is a "WWHHHOOOSSSHHHHH---COOL Spiderman Game!"

of course.

Perspectives

Background:  Sheila cut the boys' hair last night.  Erik prefers short cuts on the boys.  So, she went shorter with Merritt than she usually does.

Sheila:  I'm not sure about Merritt's haircut.
Erik:  What do you mean?
Sheila:  I think I cut it too short.
Erik:  No, I don't think so.  He looks good.  He looks like that guy who is on the movie Transporter.
Sheila:  (pauses thinking that maybe it isn't too short after all, then looks up)  Erik, that guy is bald, he shaves his head.
Erik:  Nah, he just cuts it short.

Please Excuse My EduNerdiness

One of my most favorite teachers ever (Professor Dan Koretz) on:

(High-stakes standardized testing is still something I get hot under the collar about.  It is amazing how the lack of knowledge about standardized testing is just as broad with the general public as it was when I was in graduate school a decade ago.  Please pardon me as a full conversation about this is more appropriate elsewhere.  Though, I thought I would share the link that includes the conversation about is going on in Atlanta.)

Mid-Summer Warrior

splatters fly up,
hot sun melts all around you,
still you fight and win

dogged determined,
no detail left uncovered,
flawless sacrifice

14 hours of hard labor,
and still gives a bedtime tale,
no wonder you're the dad

Picture taken at the arches on our trip.  Erik was carrying the boys back down the trail.
-------------------------------------

Evy is staying up late keeping his dad company while he finishes up some cleaning.  This is what I heard as I went off to bed.

Evy:  (shows Dad his 2nd piece of chocolate that Mom just handed him)
Dad:  Oh, wow!  You've had a lucky day.  You are eating chocolate, and you got to go to Chick-fil-A.
Evy:  And I get to hang out with YOU!  I love spending time with you, Dad.

The Harvest

. . . ah-hem . . . the garden has been, uh, besotted with stupor by flooding-record heat-replanting-weeds-bugs and so I am grateful that we don't really have to harvest anything for our sustenance.  It is starting to make a comeback--I'm still trying.  So far I've been able to get one jalapeno, some strawberries, and lots of squash blooms.

We've been curious, though, about our carrots.

We thought we would take a look-ee.

The boys are quite taken with the carrot. It has been given a tour of McKinney today.  Lucky Carrot.

A Drive Through Austin

At the beginning of June, all of the Albritton's Little Women gathered in New Braunfels, Texas for some family time.

We rented a house on Lake Dunlap and planned for a week of fun!

Erik and I took the chance of visiting around some of our favorite places in Austin on our way down to the reunion.  It was great to continue the indoctrination of our UT fan club . . . and to eat at some of our favorite places.

We started with showing the boys UT.  It was surprising to us that we hadn't been on campus for over 10 years.  (I love the fact that they are trying to go Zero Waste on the drag . . . sigh, I miss Austin.)

We started at Kirby Cafe . . . and then roamed through campus showing the boys where each of us spent most of our time.

Notice that Everett is trying to keep Merritt from jumping in the water. Always the big brother!

A nice game of tag and groovy moves on the Six Pack Lawn.

Lots of places to play hide-n-seek.

We went to Zilker park for the train and the  playground. Next time we'll have to jump in the water.

All the boys were excited about the balloon making clown.

Evy and Merritt got some pretty special balloons and Erik got some tips to help with our own balloon making.

A personal favorite, The Texas State Capitol Building.

Did you know I was a tour guide there?  And, yes, there is someone working there that worked there when I was a tour guide which was over 15 years ago.

He *almost* got it and didn't realize how close he came.

Take #30,954,665,656 'm-k?

We have spent a small fortune in Merritt-proofing our home.  I'm happy to do it to keep him safe and I INCORRECTLY assumed that the need to do this would diminish with age.

I was sooooooo wrong.

Merritt knows how to get out of his carseat.  Our long road trip provided AMPLE opportunities to perfect his methods.  He can, within, seconds escape from the straps and start working on the car handle and lock.  Today, we may have found a carseat that will keep him in his seat. I'm trying it out tomorrow.  If it doesn't work, I may have alter one of these to fit a 5-point harness carseat:

The theory is that you put on this vest and then secure the straps of the carseat through the vest.  The vest pictured is for (in smallest size) . . . 35 pounds.  Merritt is almost there but he is super skinny.

I have to do something.  Right now, we are basically pulling over every mile to get him back in the carseat.

And, in the time that it took me to write this post, he escaped from his room three times.  I'm hoping my latest doorknob cover alteration works.

I Guess I Should Have Taken an Electronics Class

Tonight, on the ride home from Target, I was interrogated by my four year old about:
  • metal detectors
  • motion sensors
  • night-vision goggles
  • alarms

I was exhausted by the end of the car ride.  I usually am a bit mind-fatigued by the end of the day due to all of his questions during the day . . . and today he exhausted the thimble of knowledge that I had about all things electrical.

Our current plan, designed by Everett, is to make a motion/metal detector with a night vision accessory.  He  picked out the box to create it.  We'll use black marker for the plan and green marker for "the night goggles."  He thinks that I can really do this.  No matter how enthusiastically I try and help him understand that it will be pretend, he is convinced that we can make it for real.  Always about the possibilities.

I'm in deep trouble here.  maybe I can buy a kit.  and, um, no, he won't forget about it when he wakes up tomorrow.

Chills and Thrills

Road Trip, Baby!

We are back.

Cars Trip 2011
(saw desert, saw mountains, saw arches and dunes, and glimpse of Radiator Springs)
head-on collision with a deerelk
lots of Provo-Salt Lake City travel, Dear State of Utah:  get some public transportation-please

Visited with friends, and friends, and family who are like friends (like we would choose to hang out with them even if we weren't related).

More to come.

In all, we drove 5,000 miles.

The boys were MARVELOUS!

And, I've got road trip entertaining skills.  If only I clamored to be the center of attention . . . 'cause I would be the most amazing Cruise Director ever.

More when I've had some sleep.

When Erik saw the following picture, he said,"My kids are so well behaved after a 30-hour drive."
