Snapshots

May 2
I think Merritt just charmed his way right out of a negative consequence. He is 4. I am doomed.

April 26
Conversation between Merritt and a friend:

4 yr old girl (very happily): We are married! So wonderful!

Merritt: (bodily function sound) TOOT!!! (Laughs hysterically)

4 yr old girl (very disturbed): We are still married but I don't like it when you use that language!

April 24
5 young boys rocked the creek clean-up this afternoon! They worked hard for 45 minutes . . . And the creek is the cleanest it has ever been!

April 18
Because this week has been overwhelming in many ways, I wanted to share my admiration in seeing a marathon runner run through our neighborhood carrying a huge American flag in support of those touched by tragedy, my respect for a mom that works so hard to support her boys and teach others how to understand their needs, my appreciation for the guy at Sonic who discounted my drink :), and the overwhelming feeling of hope brought by the many good acts of love I see each time I work on "pennies of time." You good people with your willingness to sacrifice for others inspire me.

April 6
This included a 30 min discussion/fight on how much blood should be flowing out. Deadlyaccuracyofboys

April 3
The house was really quiet.  Guess what was in the toy box?

February 13
To the Sneakiest and Sweetest Friends: Thank you! The youngest started screaming,"I SEE MY NAME!" when he saw your heart attack. And, Erik immediately tried to figure out all the languages used. We feel the love!

April 5
Caught Merritt trying to call 911 because I wasn't making mac-n-cheese for his brother.

March 14
Today was pretty tough. After I put the boys to bed, Merritt came out to apologize for getting lost at the park (horrifying story). Evy joined us, and we all talked about how we love each other, how we are grateful for being safe . . . lots of hugs and giggles (and a request for a pet cat). Great 15 minutes of little boy love! I sent them to bed and not less than 30 seconds later one boy bit another boy's finger. of course. I'm exhausted but ever so grateful for my boys and my hard working husband.

February 7
When Mom is not home, this is what we have for dinner.

January 23
Erik got a shot of Mom just as the door opened for her SURPRISE party . . . love the expression!

January 10
Many people in our neighborhood have been sick. Lots of trashcans still out. So, we rode our bikes around the block to take care of them.

January 3
Evy teaches me about unconditional love and Merritt teaches me how to live life in the fullest way possible. I'm constantly being schooled by my kids.

January 1
*someone* was feeling better. So, at 9:00 I made him clean his room. He had to don the right accessories first.

December 20
If Merritt has to winterize, he does it in style.

December 17
The boys have been leaving small surprises for our mail carrier . . . today he took the time to knock on our door and wait for us to answer it (takes us awhile to get to the door). He had the biggest grin on his face and gave the sweetest thank you to the 4 year old. Small acts completed by kids do make a difference!

December 15
Evy came down this morning dressed to go to the shelter. "Mom, I need to look my best."

December 9
All from our neighbors in the last 15 minutes!
clothes/diapers/coats/wipes/toys/toiletries!!!

This is what Evy said when we took the picture: Mom, my heart feels good. And we need to figure out how to help them because they are helping out homeless kids.

December 2
Today was one of the busiest days I've ever had. Erik was right there the entire way, picking up what I left undone and keeping our boys happy and content. And, now I sit in a mindless stupor while he *unloads* the same dishwasher that he loaded earlier this evening. Thank you!

November 18
A sign that dinner might not go as planned: When the dad takes a bite of the meal, swallows hard, and then turns to his son and says,"You know, I had to eat unusual food on my mission."

November 15
(The 3 year old slid onto the bed 30 minutes before the alarm sounded.)

As the alarm went off, I heard a little boy voice whisper from the blankets: You are doing great, Mom. You are a genius, and you are pretty. You are incredible!

What a way to wake-up! Like a love alarm. (as he then started to sit on my face). :)

November 16
Oh, yes, he did!  :)

November 7
No matter my differing viewpoint or my crazy ideas or the fact that I think that the sidepocket in the car door is perfectly designed for a trash receptacle, my husband has always been supportive and loving. Thank you, Erik Sjolseth, for being a wonderful husband and father! You love me for who I am as a person in my entirety. That is true love!

October 10
The other day, we were late getting the kids home. Everett said he wanted to take a bath and read a story. I said we only had time for one, and that he could choose. I was waiting…waiting…waiting for it…”Dad, you can read us a story *while* we take a bath”. That a boy!! Good answer. He got a story while he took a bath.

October 8
My 5 year old and I have a "Make your bed" challenge going on, and he has beat me every morning for the past week. Today, I was going to beat him. While he was taking a bath, I hurried up and made the bed. Ran into the bathroom with a triumphant yell of,"I MADE MY BED!!" He said,"Go check my room." SNAP, he beat me again!

September 20

September 6
The other day, our 5-yr old came home from school sad. He said a girl he was trying to play with wouldn’t play with him during recess. Other girls convinced her to not play with him. He asked what to do. My thought was to tell him to kick her to the curb (it’s just an expression). Fortunately, my wife responded and said that he should focus on playing with other people.

Seeing that he wasn’t thrilled by the lack of guidance, she asked him in a secretive type of voice, “Do you want to go on a ‘secret adventure’?”

Of course, he said, "yes," looking very intrigued.

“Your secret adventure is to find two different people to play with while you are at recess tomorrow.” She quickly followed up with, “But, do you want to go on a ‘*Super* Secret Adventure’?”

Of course he did.

“I need for one of those people to be someone who is not playing with someone else.” She promised him a “super secret surprise” if he was able to accomplish his mission. In essence, my wife turned a difficult situation for our son into an opportunity for him to serve someone else who might be feeling lonely.

Well, he did accomplish his mission, and he had a new (and highly coveted) snorkel and mask that he had been asking for all summer, waiting for him when he got home. More importantly, he had a great time recounting to us how his super secret mission played out, earlier that day.

My Snazzy Dresser

That would be Merritt.   He knows how to put outfits together and no outfit is complete without accessories.  He has taken to wearing these really cool safety glasses as part of his outfit.  He'll wear them to friends' houses . . . and actually come home with them, not losing them at any point.

Evy matches by theme . . . shorts with palm leaves go with a shirt with an ocean, no matter the colors.  Stripes go with stripes.

Merritt matches with color and theme.

He loves hats, necklaces, watches, pirate patches, mustaches, and sunglasses.

He is a pro at getting into boxes of clothes that he has outgrown.  So, on occasion, I have to ask him to redress from his dresser, not from the boxes.

Just a minute ago, he found some new pajamas.  I've got to start hiding his clothes in another room. The top of the closet is his domain as well now.  He is so excited to be wearing "new clothes"--cracks me up as he begged me to open the door during naptime so I could see him wearing his new duds.

"So Awesome, MOM!"

Playing with Friends

We've been exploring new parks, going to the Frank Buck Zoo, and doing our best to soak up outside weather with friends before it gets hot.  A friend of mine, Kadi, took these pictures during a trip to the Frank Buck Zoo.

(BTW, I always dress my boys in orange when we go out to places like this.  And, if they have a matching orange shirts, even better.  I can always spot their orange shirts if they get too far away from us.  And, it is another chance to use Longhorn fashion, and brainwash discuss the awesome school that UT is.  Merritt likes wearing his "hook'em shirt".)

Kadi was sooooooo helpful with Merritt while Evy was in the hospital for his video-EEG.  Here is a picture with Merritt and his friend sporting some 'staches we sent with him one day.

Two of Our Favorite Things

The boys and I have spent a lot of time doing things with just the three of us while Dad is busy out of town.  We love to cook together.  This one was banana coconut muffins.

And, we are suckers for tents.

Would You Buy From This Farmer?

He was selling bunches of herbs for 20 cents apiece.
He sold 4 bunches, gave one away, and walked away with $1.25.
The neighbors loved him.

When we walked up to the door and he rang the doorbell, he was prepared with his sales pitch.  But he always hesitated when he got to the price.  He paused, looked at me, and I would whisper the price.

He was really hoping to sell each bunch for $43.

Next time, he wants to add recipes because one neighbor simply said,"I don't use herbs when I cook," and then she shut the door.

BTW, he chose his outfit.

National Brain Injury Awareness Month

It is March Neurological Madness for us because of our Evy's seizure disorder.

At the same time, March is also National Brain Injury Awareness month.

My first experience in supporting a child with a brain injury was during my first year teaching.  My student's brain injury affected his hearing, memory, and cognitive processing.  At the same time, he was the most thoughtful and kind student.  I learned so much from him.  His injury was from a car accident.

In graduate school, I worked for a non-profit called T.H.E. BrainTrust.  Although their core membership comes from those with brain tumors and related conditions, many of the issues overlap with those who have brain injuries.

Here is one resource I found recently that is one of the easiest to understand publications on understanding a brain injury.  Traumatic Brain Injury Survival Guide

There is more to say, but my blasted arm hurts.

Got a couple of minutes, check out the info on this link:  Children and Brain Injuries
Brain injuries aren't as uncommon as you think.

As for our March Neurological Maddness, we are packing our bags, planning our fun, and have our snacks picked out.  It will be like a 3-day birthday party!

Highlights From Today

Merritt grabbing my face and pointing while saying,"Eyes beautiful, face beautiful, gasses (glasses) beautiful, nose beautiful . . . hair pretty, cheeks pretty . . . ."

Merritt asking,"Where am I?" after I had to rush him into a locker room to take care of his bloody nose.  I love it when he shows progress in asking about what is going on around/to him.

Evy very seriously telling me that he would take care of Merritt's potty treat this morning.  I said,"sure," and went to get the treat to hand to Evy.  In the meantime, he went to his own Christmas candy and took out a chocolate coin while telling me that,"no, thanks, I've got it, Mom!"  What a nice boy!

"Mom, when can I buy one of those balloons that sounds like a toot?"  Evy.

I have the best job in the world.

Ups and Downs

Today . . . lost an earring of my most beloved pair.

Merritt had a successful #2 drop at the toilet.  We are on our way, Baby!

Prepped for 12 meals.  Nice stash in the freezer and fridge now.  Trying out some new ways to get my boys to eat protein.

Crackerjack swim at the pool.

Mount Vesuvias of Applesauce at lunch.

Lots of mud in the backyard.

Merritt is not napping.

It is 2:25 and I have the freedom to get back in my fleece pajama bottoms.  NICE!

Stuff They Said and Stuff

Evy: This is my favorite part, where he burps!  (explained while watching Clifford.  and, yes, Clifford did burp)

Merritt, when he realizes he is about to get into trouble, tries to deflect all consequence by laughing, fakely, and saying,"Oh, so funny!  So funny!  Sooooo funny!"

When I explained to Merritt all the awesome things we were going to do on our trip, he ran around screaming.  I, trying to calm him, said,"I know you are excited, but we need to get our rest first."  He then ran around screaming,"I EXCITED, EXCITED, EXCITED!!!"  And then, thankfully, ran screaming into his room and right to bed.

Merritt can recognize most of the letters in the alphabet and tell you the sounds they make.  Can he tell you the basic colors?  It depends.

Everett opens each card he receives with the manner of a man opening a sacred document.   He just glows at hearing the marvelous things that people say in those cards!

I explained to Everett that he needed to get some exercise at the gym along with playing the videogames he likes.  He said,"Okay."  And, sure enough, when I arrived to pick him up, he was playing basketball, working diligently to make baskets.  Sometimes I believe he is the most obedient boy on the planet!

Every morning, Merritt explains to me his agenda for the day,"ah friends, ah dinosaurs, ah animals!"

Acting like gorillas and T-rex dinosaurs were the favorite today.

Haircuts, By Golly!

Part of our seasonal decorating for October means that we get out every wig and every dress-up hat and line them up and down the banister for easy access, to, you know, wear them.  The kids love it.  I love it.  And, only occasionally will I make them "sing" their questions and comments to me while we are wearing our millinery delights.  (Evy is pretty good at it!)

Here are a couple of shots from one moment today:

And, yes, the boys really do need haircuts under all that fro. And, yes, if you look closely, you can see a bunch of junk on the landing behind Merritt.  And,  yes, the rest of the house was that messy today, too.  The house imploded today: the toys convened a revolution to organization, the dirty dishes had offspring, the laundry refused to jump into the washer, and the shoes are taking over each room as we speak.  And, we had nothing to do with it, I'm sure.  (we did create an "outdoor classroom" today--totally awesome!  Can't wait to share it with you soon.)

Today's Runnings

Yesterday we were out of it.  Today, we are better.

Hot Spots:
Took the boys out to a restaurant (gasp, I *know*).  They were awesomely behaved.  The lady at the cookie store said,"You have such well-behaved boys."  That's a keeper of a comment.

After leaving a surprise for Erik at his hotel, we went to a park. Merritt had so much fun that I had to carry him off the place and to the car when it was time to leave.

"Mom, we make a creature with more than two arms!"

This evening after telling Everett his bedtime story he was asking about the legitimacy of dragons, the likelihood that they were really real.

Evy:  So, they were probably make-up . . . HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!! (as he gets how "make-up" can be more than one thing)

Evy:  Dragons covered in make-up!!!!!   HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!  (he was laughing so hard and so loud that he woke his brother.  he was quite taken with the connection.  there is almost nothing quite so wonderful as watching a child laugh gleefully and without inhibition.)

UT . . . OWie Weekend

We stocked up on ORANGE food the night before . . . [I can't tell you how long Everett has BEGGED me to get those orange puff balls (like over a year)] . . . and he found an occasion where I really couldn't say no.

Breakfast brought us pumpkin scones with orange glaze.  YUM!

We put out our Ugliest UT Sweater Competition Photos.  And delivered Orange Goodies to Fellow UT Fans.

Next, THE GAME.  UT vs OU, the Red River Shootout.  The boys were so excited!  We had nachos, orange junk food, pasta e fagioli, nachos, mandarin orange jarritos, orange candy, and water.  (at halftime, there was a cool treat)

We watched the entire game.  Sad that we lost but impressed that our young players stuck it out.  It will be that much better next year.

After Quiet Time, Evy devised his own football game . . .

At one point, I was chasing Merritt down the field and getting close to him.  He stopped and said,"Owie, bee, check!"  And as soon as I slowed down and stopped, he grinned and took off running.  Cheeky thing.  How he knew to be tricky, I'm not sure.

 (football videos listed last)

And, the Winner of the Ugliest UT Sweater is:
